"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

King James Version

What does 1 Corinthians 2:14 mean? โ†’

Passage Context

12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Devotional Reflection

The Holy Spirit is God's constant gift, His promise, and His seal. The Spirit is our assurance that what He started with Jesus' death on the cross and what we joined in through faith and baptism, He will finish when Jesus comes back. But the world doesn't understand this great promise, just like it doesn't understand much of what the Bible says. Without the gift of the Holy Spirit, their eyes can only see what they can touch with their fingers. They can't fully perceive what is true in God's heart and written in His Word.

Prayer

I'm grateful that you sent Jesus, Father. I give thanks to Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit. I'm grateful to the Spirit for never abandoning me. Lord, as I receive more of your Spirit, continue to fill me up until my will and my life more fully reflect who you are and what you want. As your presence is blessing me right now, use me to bless others. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

Father, I'm grateful that you sent Jesus. Jesus, I am grateful that you sent the Spirit. Spirit, I'm glad you're always there for me. As the Spirit fills me, O Lord, fill me even more and more, so that my will and life more perfectly reflect your desires and character. Use me to bless other people the way your presence blesses me right now. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
