1 John 3:17 ยท KJV

"But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"

King James Version

Passage Context

15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

Devotional Reflection

LoveJoyGratitudeHopeCompassion

The Bible is so gritty with the dirty things of real life, and I love it. John advised his congregation in the verse before that they should be prepared to die for one another. In principle, that makes sense, especially if you don't believe it will ever be required. But this passage makes the implementation of that idea a daily reality: If someone in your church is in need, then feel inspired to assist them; that is what it means to lay down your life!

Prayer

Use me, holy and righteous Father, to help others around me by becoming Your hands and heart. Give me the kindness and endurance needed to help individuals in need who are members of my church family, as well as those who do not yet know Jesus as Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
