Passage Context

1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Devotional Reflection

Salvation is a priceless possession. However, if a child persists in the same stage of growth and development for an extended period of time, we know there is a serious problem. Physical growth in children stopping is a very worrying sign. This is also true in our spiritual lives, as Hebrews 6 reminds us. God does not want us to remain in our infancy! He wants us to keep improving. Our Heavenly Father wants us to desire good things that build us up. What are you going to do today, then, to satisfy your spiritual hunger and draw nearer to the Lord?

Prayer

Mighty God, I appreciate Your love and saving me. I sincerely hope to develop in Your grace. Bless me as I work to establish virtuous habits and acquaint myself with spiritually nourishing materials today. But Holy God, I recognize that only You can bring about true growth, so I humbly implore You to fortify me with Your Spirit as I strive to follow Your character. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Salvation is a very valuable thing. But we know something is very wrong if a child stays in the same stage of growth and development for a long time. When a child's physical growth stops, this is a very worrying sign. Hebrews 6 reminds us that this is also true in our spiritual lives. God doesn't want us to stay children! He wants us to keep getting better. Our Father wants us to desire good things that make us stronger. So, what will you do today to feed your spiritual hunger and grow closer to the Lord?

Prayer

Thank you, All-Powerful God, for loving me and saving me. I want to grow in Your grace so much. Bless me today as I try to form holy habits and fill myself with things that will help me grow spiritually. But, Holy God, I know that I can only really grow if You help me, so I ask You to give me strength through Your Spirit as I try to be like You. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
