1 Peter 3:8 ยท KJV

"Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:"

King James Version

What does 1 Peter 3:8 mean? โ†’

Passage Context

6Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

Devotional Reflection

Unity and peace are not by chance! They happen because people want them to and let them. But they are more than just ways of being. God tells us to pursue them. How do we work together and get along? Peter reminds us of three things we must do as "church" people: 1) actively share the sorrows and worries of those who are hurting; 2) love each other the way a healthy family loves and values each member; and 3) deal with the mistakes of others that hurt us with compassion instead of arrogance, knowing that we can sin and hurt those we love, too.

Prayer

Father, I admit that I have allowed my overly sensitive self to be hurt and have reacted pettily when my fellow Christians have not treated me as I felt they should have. Since I am aware of how those whom You created treated Jesus, I shouldn't be shocked when things don't always work out for me. However, Father, if You could teach me when to confront those who hurt me in a loving way and when to ignore them and find a way to help them because of a deeper wound that has rendered them helpless in life. Father, make me a channel for Your unity, grace, peace, and harmony. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

Father, I'm sorry that I've let my overly sensitive self get hurt and acted like a baby when my Christian brothers and sisters didn't treat me the way I thought I deserved. I know that the people who mistreated Jesus were rude and shameful to Him, so I shouldn't be surprised when bad things happen to me. But, Father, please help me know when to confront those who hurt me in a loving way and when to just ignore the jab and find a way to help them because a deeper wound has left them unable to live their lives. Father, use me as a way to spread Your peace, unity, grace, and harmony. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
