2 Corinthians 1:4 Β· KJV

"Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

King James Version

What does 2 Corinthians 1:4 mean? β†’

Passage Context

2Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
6And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

Devotional Reflection

When we make others feel better, we feel better as well. We are not given the Holy Spirit's consolation and God's presence because we are superior to other people. Instead, He comforts us so that we can help, inspire, and empower others. God has no hands, but I can glorify Him and serve others by using mine.

Prayer

I've experienced times when I was too broken to continue, tender Shepherd. I am aware that Your abundant grace and mercy gave me the perseverance to go on. Please use me this week to comfort and love others, allowing them to experience Your warm embrace and grow more eager for the day we will be reunited with You in heaven. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

We are given comfort because we are sad. We are given a blessing because we need one. We can take comfort in the fact that God loves us. We feel better when we help others feel better. Even though all of the above are true, the last one is the most important. There's something about feeling comforted that you can't fully understand until you share it with someone else. It is the last step in getting over sadness, hurt, loss, and disappointment. Until we give the comfort we've received to someone else, our own comfort is weak, shallow, and limited. Give comfort to others!

Prayer

O LORD, God of heaven and earth, Creator of the universe, thank you for knowing my heart, caring about my worries, and comforting me when I'm hurt. Help me give someone else your grace, mercy, and comfort today. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

We feel better when we help others feel better. God doesn't give us His presence and the comfort of the Holy Spirit because we're better than other people. No, He gives us comfort so that we can equip, empower, and inspire others. God has no human hands, but I can only honor Him and help other people when I use mine.

Prayer

Tender Shepherd, there have been times when I was so broken that I couldn't go on. I know that Your rich grace and mercy gave me the strength to keep going. Please use me this week to bring comfort and love to others, so they can feel Your warm embrace and long more for the day we'll see You face-to-face in heaven. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
