Passage Context

3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Devotional Reflection

Wow! Amazing point. God desires for us to live moral lives. He wants us to use what we know and be efficient and productive with it, not just know it in our heads. However, I need to put in some effort to improve in these things. Peter is telling the crowd, "God wants you to get moving and use your lives to change the world!" I'm prepared! So let's get going.

Prayer

I'm going to work hard to increase in Your grace, holy God. Please accept my efforts as a sincere thank you for loving me despite my unlovability and saving me when I was lost. I want my life with Jesus to be fruitful for Your glory. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Oftentimes, we are so afraid of works-based salvation that we forget that love and grace ultimately call us to act, not just think. It takes effort to take action. Peter instructs us to exert every effort. He explains the importance of this work in the following verses. We will be able to grow in our knowledge of Jesus if we have more and more of these qualities. Let's be productive! Throughout our efforts, we can be confident that the Holy Spirit is the power at work, producing the fruit that makes effectiveness possible (cf. Galatians 5:22–25).

Prayer

Father, shape me and make me more like You and Your will. I don't pray this to get attention for myself, but so that You can use me better to spread Your blessings and grace to those around me. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Wow! What a point. God wants us to use our lives to do good things. He doesn't want us to just know things in our heads; He wants us to use what we know and be effective and productive with it. But I have to put in some work and try to get better at these things. Peter is saying, "All right, people, God wants you to get going and make a difference with your lives!" I'm all set! Let's start now.

Prayer

Holy God, I will make an effort to grow in Your grace. Please bless my efforts and accept them as my sincere thanks for loving me when I wasn't worth loving and saving me when I was lost. I want my life with Jesus to be useful for Your glory. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
