Amos 5:4 ยท KJV

"For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:"

King James Version

What does Amos 5:4 mean? โ†’

Passage Context

2The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
3For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
4For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
5But seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought.
6Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el.

Devotional Reflection

GratitudeHope

Are you a "churchgoer"? Ideally, no! Don't misunderstand me; I'm not suggesting you forgo Sunday's service and fellowship. It's advised that we continue to congregate as Christians (Hebrews 10:25). However, when we get together as a body of Christians, it is to encourage one another and to worship God. We are the church; we don't go to church! (The term "church" never refers to a structure in the New Testament!) In the Old Testament, God forewarned His people that just attending places of worship was pointless. They needed to find Him instead! In my opinion, that is precisely what God would have us accomplish. We also have the opportunity to share fellowship, solace, and support with one another as we seek Him together.

Prayer

The knowledge that I will never be far from Your love gives me peace as I confront the challenges of this week, holy and loving Father. At the same time, I cherish those unique times when I gather with other Christians and feel their genuine and potent presence. Even though I am aware that You are always with us when we get together, there are moments when my circumstances, my emotions, or the events in our church family cause me to lose sight of Your presence. Dear Father, I ask for a dynamic and powerful worship service this week. I ask for a tangible sense of Your presence. I hope that when my brothers and sisters and I support one another and praise You, You will be exalted. Please make us feel closer to You today. In Jesus' name, I ask it. Amen.
