Passage Context

27Neither give place to the devil.
28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

In Christian communication, the goal is not just to be clear. It's not enough to just be understood. It's not enough to just be honest. The goal is to be helpful, supportive, and encouraging based on what the other person needs.

Prayer

Give me a pure heart, tender Shepherd, that my words may be pure. Give me a kind heart so that my words will also be kind. Give me a heart full of joy and inspiration so that I can impart these to the people you place in my path and with whom I interact. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

We can be cute with our words. We can sound smart by the way we talk. We can win arguments with what we say. We can defend ourselves with what we say. We can lie and change the truth with our words. We can do many things with our words, but God wants us to use them to bless. So, when we talk, if the words we say don't bless and help the people to whom we say them, we shouldn't say anything at all. Grandma had a point: "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all.

Prayer

Dear God, grant me the discernment to speak words today that will bless my household, my workplace, and everyone I come in contact with. When I speak, I want to be sincere, compassionate, loving, and merciful. Lord, may what I say today be used for Your benefit and for Your honor. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Christian communication aims for more than simple clarity. The aim is not only to be understood, either. Being honest is not even the only objective. The objective is to be acceptable, uplifting, and encouraging to people, depending on their needs.

Prayer

Give me a pure heart, kind Shepherd, so my words may be pure. Give me a kind heart so that my words will also be kind. Give me a heart full of joy and inspiration so that I might impart it to the people you place in my path and with whom I interact. In Jesus' name, I ask it. Amen.
