Passage Context

21And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother.
22And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

Devotional Reflection

GratitudeHopeAwe

When God's people were physically and spiritually in bad shape, He promised judgment, both on them and on those who hurt them. He also tells us why. He will show them how great and holy He is so that they will know that He is YAHWEH, the God of "His people" and of all nations. I'd love it if God showed us how great and holy He is right now, wouldn't you? It would be great if God were praised for who He is and what He has done. May that time come soon.

Prayer

Father, as your flawed, mortal child, I do fear that you will show yourself to the world in a bold way. We humans are weak and dying compared to your blazing glory. But I'm sure of my relationship with you through Jesus, and dear Father, I want you to be respected and honored in my life. I'm sick of hearing your name and glory thrown around without reason. Raise yourself up before the world! Show everyone your holy majesty so they can see that you are the only true God. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

FearShame

They will know that I am the LORD," a recurring theme in Ezekiel's prophecies, is also a terrifying one for his rebellious, sinful, and wicked people. God is pure. Those who claim Him as their God must reflect His glory and greatness. They had better extol God's holiness, because if they don't, God will, even at their expense. God will be known as God. This is a sobering reminder that even the name of God is holy in a day when so many profane it and use it so casually in their reactions and frustrations. He will demonstrate His greatness and holiness.

Prayer

Forgive me, God, for not reverencing You as I ought and as You deserve. Please bring a wave of rebirth among Your people to celebrate You and Your holiness with more passion and a deeper sense of wonder. You are holy, righteous, magnificent, mighty, and great. Help me exhibit my honor to You more consistently in my life and speech. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
