"Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow."

King James Version

What does Isaiah 1:17 mean? โ†’

Passage Context

15And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

Devotional Reflection

Do you find it easy to substitute religious rituals for helping people in need? I know I do! But God doesn't want us to get so caught up in talking about Him and praising His actions that we forget we're supposed to care for others like He does. Whether Jesus is talking about His ministry in Luke 4:18-19 or James is talking about the kind of religion that makes God happy in James 1:26-27, we must remember that true faith means treating others the way God would. Today's verse tells us what God does and how we should act ourselves.

Prayer

O Great Comforter, help me to see those who need Your love today and give me the awareness, patience, and compassion I need to help them. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

When a friend gets hurt, it's easy for us to get mad. When someone we care about has been wronged, we are ready to fight back. But God tells us that our worship doesn't mean much if we don't also protect the weak, the outcast, the oppressed, and the forgotten. Not only do our friends need our help, but so do people who don't have any friends. "To do right" doesn't just mean being a good person and staying away from bad things in our holy little corners. It also means caring for, comforting, and encouraging people whom no one else wants to pay attention to.

Prayer

Please pardon me for being self-centered in my use of Your grace and love, Father. I'll admit that I frequently find it convenient to hang out with people who resemble me in terms of appearance, mindset, and attire. I am aware that many people around me in the world do not have a friend, much less a defender. Dear LORD, please open my eyes to those in my world whom You want me to care for, inspire, and bless. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

A man must look out for himself! We do need to be responsible, though. But, as far as God is concerned, part of being responsible and blessed is caring for others, standing up for the weak, and stepping in when someone else is being taken advantage of. We are our brothers' and sisters' keeper, after all.

Prayer

God, take away the selfishness in my heart that makes me not care about the poor, abused, forgotten, and broken. Give me Your caring eyes and Jesus' kind heart so I can see them and help them. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
