Passage Context

20In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
21To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

Devotional Reflection

GriefFear

How many times have you been let down by a church leader, a person you voted for, a friend who betrayed you, a loved one who left you, or someone you trusted? Even though we care about and love other people, everyone else in our world is just like us: flawed individuals who breathe the same air and walk the same ground. Only one person deserves our full trust. He showed us by giving up what was most important to Him so that we could understand how much He loved us. Don't put your trust in other people. Only God can keep your trust safe. Let's have faith in Him!

Prayer

Father, you are aware of the rifts in my heart that other people's shortcomings have left behind. Because of the shortcomings and inconsistent nature of your people, I confess that I have occasionally lost faith in your way. It is difficult for it not to feel that way, Father, even though I know in my heart that their failures do not equal your failure. Please call me near. Give me a heart that is more forgiving of those who mistreat me. Establish my faith in you, O LORD, and make it strong and firm. I have faith in you. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

GratitudeHope

God will bring the proud down to earth. He has set aside a certain day to do this. But until that day dawns, God's Kingdom people must live knowing that even the apparently powerful but ungodly will be brought to ruin. We shouldn't put our faith in human power, because it can disappear like dew in the sun. Death limits the power of humans. When a tyrant's breath is gone, so is his power. After the life of an evil person has ended, all that remains is the evil. Our faith must be placed in Yahweh Sabaoth, the Lord God of the armies of heaven. In contrast, everything else is just a small, blurry representation of the real thing.

Prayer

Abba Father, please forgive me for the times I relied on my own smarts, wits, and wisdom to get through life. Please forgive me for not trusting in Your deliverance and for relying on sneaky methods and bad people. Please wash me clean and give me a pure heart and a strong desire for You. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

HopeGrief

I'd be happy to have a friend. I wish my dad hadn't gone away. I wish she were more helpful. Only if... Even though people can let us down, we still put a lot of our hopes in them. They make mistakes just like we do and die just like we do. So, while we are involved in the lives of other people, let's also remember to keep our hopes connected to the Son of God, who "conquered death and brought immortality and life to light" and who will "never leave or forsake" us.

Prayer

Dear Father, please forgive me for basing my happiness and well-being on being accepted by a certain group or loved by a certain person. I know that the only real hope I have is in Jesus, in whose name I pray. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
