Isaiah 29:15 Β· KJV

"Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?"

King James Version

What does Isaiah 29:15 mean? β†’

Passage Context

13Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
17Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

Devotional Reflection

We can be so silly at times, can't we? We try to keep the Lord from knowing what we've done and what we're planning. We're only fooling ourselves, though. At first glance, the fact that God knows our plans and sees what we do seems scary. But when you think about it for a while, isn't it nice that God can see everything, including our thoughts and motives? This ensures that justice will be done and that our mistakes will be judged based on what we meant to do, not just how bad they turned out. On top of that, it means that people who try to hurt us will have to answer to God, so we don't have to worry about "settling the score" or "getting even.

Prayer

Father, please forgive me for the times I tried to keep my plans and thoughts from You. Create a new and clean heart in me so I don't have to worry about what You might find out about me. Use the power of Your Spirit to make my spirit want to be like You and long for You to be in my life. I want to spend my life serving Your kingdom and living for Your glory. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
