Isaiah 53:3 Β· KJV

"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."

King James Version

What does Isaiah 53:3 mean? β†’

Passage Context

1Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
2For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Devotional Reflection

Jesus was everything, but He was reduced to nothing for us. However, the majority of the people He came to save here on earth didn't recognize or accept Him. People simply assumed that He earned what He received. Most people didn't change their ways. Over the years, though, there was something about that tale of self-sacrifice that touched people's hearts and brought God's lost children home. We come to understand that He is a servant for our salvation in addition to being a Savior on the way home.

Prayer

My breath is taken away by Your plan to save me, God Almighty. I'll never understand why You took Your beloved Son and subjected Him to such public humiliation while He was still on earth. But I do know this: in gratitude for His significant offering, I will serve You with all of my strength because You love me with an everlasting love. I appreciate Your love. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

God Most High, Your plan to save me blows my mind. I will never understand why You took Your precious Son and put Him through such public shame while He was still alive.
