Isaiah 53:5 Β· KJV

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

King James Version

What does Isaiah 53:5 mean? β†’

Passage Context

3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Devotional Reflection

LovePeaceGratitudeHopeAwe

I don't understand how Jesus could be powerful enough to support it. All of our sins were assumed by Him. He allowed it all to be placed on Him so that we wouldn't be responsible for the consequences. However, we are healed as a result of that terrible sacrifice. The worst illness a person can have is a sin-sick soul, which is treated by God. He was pierced, beaten, and punished for our sins. He has given us His tranquility and a place where we are at home.

Prayer

God of peace, let the wonder of your grace abound within my soul. Please keep in mind the price of your love. Instill in me a constant and lasting remembrance of your atoning grace. I'm grateful. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

I don't know how Jesus could be strong enough to hold it up. He took on all of our sins. He let it all be put on Him so that we wouldn't have to deal with the results. But because of that horrible sacrifice, we are healed. We are cured of the worst sickness a person can have: a soul that is sick with sin. For our sins, He was pierced, crushed, and punished. He has given us His peace and a place to belong in their stead.

Prayer

God of peace, let the wonder of Your grace fill my heart. Don't let me forget how much Your love has cost. Make sure I always and forever remember Your saving grace. Many thanks. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
