James 4:10 Β· KJV
"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
King James Version
What does James 4:10 mean? βPassage Context
Devotional Reflection
Humble yourselves. That sounds really bad. At least, it sounds rude to the self-promotion culture of "get ahead at all costs" and "don't look back, the competition is catching up to you." People have forgotten how good it is to be humble. Humility is about knowing our place in the world without showing it off. This is often confused with being weak or shy. Only God can permanently exalt, so the key is to know where we stand with Him and let Him put us where He wants to honor Him.
Prayer
Abba, thank you for welcoming me into your presence, Father, Most Holy God. I'm in awe of you for inviting me into your presence when I consider everything you've accomplished and the amazing universe you created and keep together with your word. That you even care about my word choice astounds me. I'm grateful that you are aware of me and have a plan for my future. Help me to live humbly and graciously before others today as I strive to exalt you in all that I do. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
