Jeremiah 17:9 Β· KJV

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

King James Version

What does Jeremiah 17:9 mean? β†’

Passage Context

7Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
8For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
10I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
11As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

Devotional Reflection

Jesus told us that what's in our hearts shows up in our public lives in the end. The wise man in Proverbs advised us to keep our hearts safe because they are where our life comes from. God knows what's in our hearts, says Jeremiah. At Heartlight, we want to stress how important it is to be mindful of what we put in our hearts because what we put in them really affects what happens inside them. Invite the Lord into everything you do, think, read, watch, and listen to. Ask Him to get rid of lies and help you discern if what you're doing is really worth your time and effort.

Prayer

Father in heaven, guide me to guard my heart and to have the discernment not to allow anything to enter it that would take away from its devotion to You. Through and through, I want to be pure. Please look through me and assist me in getting rid of anything that might divert my devotion from You or undermine my ability to influence others in Your favor. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

Righteous Father, please help me keep my heart safe and know not to put things in it that would take away its love for You. I want to be perfect in every way. Please search me and help me get rid of anything that would take my devotion away from You or hurt my influence for You with other people. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
