"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
King James Version
What does Jeremiah 29:11 mean? βPassage Context
Devotional Reflection
When Israel was in ruins and facing a cruel enemy who would steal all of their glory and strip them down to their souls, God made a promise. Even though God destroyed them because they disobeyed and sinned, His punishment wasn't just to chastise them; it was also to save them. God promised them prosperity, hope, and a future even though they were going to die. Just like a doctor has to make a broken bone hurt in order for it to heal, God's discipline is not random, but healing and, in the end, life-giving.
Prayer
Help me, Lord, to find Your grace in my struggles, not in the easing of my pain and struggle, but in the redemption and transformation of my heart and my habits to Your glory. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
Jeremiah was telling God's people that God would save and rebuild them 70 years after the destruction. Even though they had left God many times before, He would not leave them or His promises to them. He would stay true. In fact, God was planning and getting ready for them to have a bright future. This promise also tells us that God has plans for us, no matter how bad things look in our own lives. He will do what He said He would do. He will save us and make us happy. Because He is trustworthy and we trust in His Son, Jesus, who saves us from every enemy, we can have a strong hope and a bright future.
Prayer
Give me faith, Lord, even when I'm tired, down, and discouraged. Make me want to believe in Your big promises. Lord, when my faith is weak, please give me courage. Help me do what Your Word says, no matter how hard it seems or how down I feel. Because of Jesus, You have given me a bright future. Please help me be more aware of this great gift as I live. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
