John 1:13 Β· KJV

"Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

King James Version

What does John 1:13 mean? β†’

Passage Context

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

Devotional Reflection

We live in a time and place where everyone has rights. "I have the right to..." Just finish the sentence. We don't deserve to be God's children, though. God's grace gives us that right. God had to pay a lot for us to have this right. Jesus came to earth, lived, died, and then was brought back to life. We receive this grace through faith. When we trust in Jesus as Lord and are baptized and born again by the power of the Holy Spirit, God gives us a new start (John 3:3-7; Titus 3:3-7). To be born of God, to be born from above, or to be born "again" gives us all the rights of heirs in God's house (Galatians 3:26-29; Galatians 4:1-7). So let's not take for granted this grace, this blessing, this adoption, this right. Right now, we are God's children (1 John 3:1-3). Let's be grateful for this favor and act like we belong.

Prayer

Abba Father, I appreciate You bringing me into Your family. May Your influence, character, mercy, holiness, compassion, righteousness, and love be evident in my life. Father, I want to emulate You. Please indwell me with Your Spirit so that I may more closely resemble You in everything I do and say today, just as I was born into Your family by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

I have the right to do this because we live in a time and place where everyone has rights. Simply complete the phrase. But we don't deserve to be God's children. We have that right because of God's mercy. God had to pay a high price for us to enjoy this privilege. Jesus came to earth, lived, died, and then rose again. This grace is obtained by faith. God offers us a fresh start when we believe in Jesus as Lord and are baptized and born again by the power of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-7; Titus 3:3-7). Being born of God, born from above, or "again" grants us all the privileges of heirs in God's home (Galatians 3:26-4:7).

Prayer

I appreciate you allowing me to become a part of your family, Daddy. May my actions today reflect your power, morality, kindness, sanctity, compassion, and love. I aspire to be like you, Father. Please fill me with your Spirit today so that everything I do and say will reflect you, just as the power of the Holy Spirit drew me into your family. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Thank you, Abba Father, for letting me join your family. May my life show your influence, character, mercy, holiness, compassion, righteousness, and love. Father, I want to be like you. So, just as the Holy Spirit brought me into your family when I was born, please fill me with your Spirit so that everything I do and say today will be more like you. I pray in the name of my big brother, Jesus. Amen.
