"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness."

King James Version

What does John 12:46 mean? β†’

Passage Context

44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Nicodemus is one of the great figures in the Gospel of John. He approached Jesus at night, and Jesus told him that those who love the truth will seek out the light. Later, Nicodemus defended Jesus despite being mocked for doing so. Then, at the worst possible political and religious moment, he revealed himself as Jesus' disciple: he took Jesus' broken and dead body and assisted Joseph of Arimathea in placing it in a tomb. Nicodemus did not remain in the shadows. Nor should we. Jesus is the world's light; if we cannot find our light in Him, how great is our darkness!

Prayer

Father, I desire to walk with You in the light. Jesus' light was not extinguished by the darkness of Calvary; rather, it burned brighter for me. I recognize Your love for me at the cross. At the cross, I recognize that Jesus has forgiven my sins. At the cross, I see Jesus' perfected love for You and me. Father, thank You for Your gracious salvation. Jesus, we thank You for Your incredible sacrifice. I pray in the name of Jesus, Your perfect Lamb. Amen.
