Passage Context

13Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

Devotional Reflection

LoveGratitudeFearShame

Jesus demonstrated to His disciples what it means to live in a community centered on the cross by assuming the position of a household slave and washing their feet. He did it with the knowledge that they would flee, disown, betray, and deny Him. Incredible! However, He also instructs us to do the same. Jesus says, "You cannot claim to love Me if you do not love those for whom I suffered and died!" (see 1 John 3:14-18 & 1 John 4:7-12)

Prayer

I desire to be like my Teacher and your Son, O God. I renounce my self-serving ways so that I can serve your children sincerely, even if they are unkind to me. Please grant me the strength, courage, and perseverance to live up to these convictions and reflect Christ's character more flawlessly. I pray in the name of Jesus, my Lord. Amen.
