Passage Context

10When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

Devotional Reflection

HopeFear

Darkness is more than just a sign; it's a way of life and a way of seeing the world. The dark is where lies, bad things, crime, predators, sin, and death happen. To be a follower of Jesus, we have to give Him our hearts and let Him get rid of the darkness inside us so we don't have to be afraid of the darkness outside. In this way, Jesus gives us light, but this light does more than just brighten a dark room. This light makes the heart shine.

Prayer

I thank You for sending Jesus to drive out the dark fears that so easily engulf me, holy God who dwells in glorious and unrelenting light. I ask for strength and bravery so that I can lead others to the light as well as live in it. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Do you walk in the light or in the dark? Can you clearly see where you're going, or do you find yourself stumbling? Jesus wants us to follow Him with courage. The way may not always be easy, but you can be sure of where you're going and how to get there. Most of all, you won't ever need a night light because you'll always have His light, the only light that gives life, even when it's very dark.

Prayer

Shepherd, you are so kind and wonderful. Please give me a faithful heart. Even when I'm feeling the darkest and most hopeless, I want to be able to find your light and share it with other people. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

After watering my yard in the dark last night, I was so happy to find a flashlight so I wouldn't be surprised by any "critters" when I reached into the bushes to turn my faucet on and off. My joy, on the other hand, is much greater because I found Jesus. He lights up my heart on my darkest nights, my future with His coming glory, my path with His words of truth, and my hope with the dawn of every Sunday, which reminds me of His victory over the grave.

Prayer

Father, dearest, holiest God, how can I ever thank You enough for being my light? Jesus will show me the way until the light of Your glory shines from my face. Many thanks. I praise and thank You in the name of Jesus, the Light of the world. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
