"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

King James Version

What does Joshua 1:9 mean? โ†’

Passage Context

7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
10Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
11Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

Devotional Reflection

Never be abandoned! Never be alone. What a promise. Through all of life's ups and downs, temptations and victories, and even through death, God will be by our side (Psalm 139:1-24), so that we can feel His power and be brave. We're not alone in this.

Prayer

Thank you, O God who is and was and is to come, for remaining when all others abandon and depart. In my constantly changing life, you are the one constant. Help me to honor you and discover more about you by making me more tenacious and faithful in my commitments and relationships. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Even though these words were said to Joshua when he took over for Moses, we can still use them. Read Psalm 139 out loud for a moment, and you'll see that God's promise to be with us is for everyone who truly calls on Him. Listen to what Jesus says in Matthew 28:18โ€“20. He tells His disciples that He will always be with them, even until the end of the world. In Hebrews 13:5, God's promise is repeated from an Old Testament blessing: "I will never leave you, I will never abandon you!" Let's be strong. Our God, our Father, and our Shepherd is always close, even if it doesn't seem that way. We can't go anywhere without Him being close to us and inside of us. We are not on our own. We don't need to worry. Even death can't take us away from His love (cf. Romans 8:35-39).

Prayer

Be close to me, dear Father, not just because you promised to and because you are there, but also because I am aware of you. I need to know you are close by so I can take advantage of the great chances I have. As I face the hard things in my life, I need to know I can count on your help and love. I know that you will always love me. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Never left alone! Never by myself! What a guarantee. God will be with us through all the ups and downs of life, through temptations and victories, and even through death (Psalm 139:1-24). So that we can be brave and feel His power. We are not on our own!

Prayer

God, who has always been there and will always be there, thank you for being there and staying there when everyone else left. You are the only one who has never changed in my life. Help me be more reliable and honest in my relationships and commitments so I can honor you and learn more about you. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
