Passage Context

30Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
31Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
32Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.
33And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.
34But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Devotional Reflection

Honoring elderly people is often disregarded at a time when respect is not widely understood and much less frequently applied. However, in this location, honoring the elderly is just as important as honoring God, according to the LORD's own word. We shouldn't be shocked to see that the first four commandments were focused on our connection with God. Therefore, the fact that God made respecting parents the first commandment in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) geared towards our relationship with others shouldn't come as a surprise.

Prayer

Thank you, Holy and Eternal God, for giving me parents who are both physical and spiritual. Please extend a particular blessing to those who have served as my spiritual mentors. I'm not sure where I would have ended up without their direction. Help me to develop the character that will be required by the people you have put in front of me for influence as I age and mature. May we all, young and old, restore respect and dignity to our interactions with one another in front of you in our generation. In Jesus' name, I ask it. Amen.
