King James Version

Passage Context

31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Devotional Reflection

In the four Gospels, Jesus is called by many names, either directly or by implication (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Just in this one passage, Jesus is called "child," "son," "Jesus," "great," "Son of the Most High," "King," "son of David," and "leader of Israel" (Jacob). Jesus is impossible to describe, but by becoming human, He chose to be limited to imperfect ones. However, all of these names and descriptions help us find Jesus as our Savior in every good and bad thing that happens in life. Jesus is a Savior for every time of year.

Prayer

Thank you, Holy and Almighty Father, for the various titles and descriptions that Jesus is given. They assist me in understanding the depth and breadth of His nature. Please grant that whenever I walk through the darkness of doubt brought on by the evil one, I may always find a facet of Jesus's ministry, or a name or description of Jesus, to help me persevere. Father, please help me to see Jesus and not my interests and prejudices so that I will recognize Him and He will recognize me when He returns. In Jesus's precious name, I pray. Amen.

Holy and powerful Father, I thank You for all the ways Jesus is talked about and called. They show me how many different sides He has and how deep His character goes. Please bless me so that I can always find a part of Jesus' ministry or a name or description of Jesus to hold on to when I walk through the shadows of doubt caused by the evil one. Help me, Father, to see Jesus and not my worries and preferences, so that when He comes back, He will know me and I will know Him. I pray in the name of the Savior, whose name is great. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
