Passage Context

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

In the same sentence, the Lord's glory and shepherds are mentioned. In Israel, shepherds had a great history. Abraham, Moses, and David were all famous shepherds, and Psalm 23 says that God is a great shepherd. At this point in Israelite history, though, they were not very well thought of. They had the smell of sheep. They were with sheep all the time. They weren't very clean or religious, so they couldn't be called spiritual. So, when God chose to use angels to tell shepherds about the birth of Jesus, He made it clear that everyone is loved by God, that everyone can talk to God, and that everyone is wanted by God.

Prayer

God, You are holy and powerful, but I confess to You that sometimes I judge people by their reputation and outward appearance. However, I'm struck by how strongly You feel that everyone should know about Your grace in Christ today. Give me a desire to spread Your grace and a heart that loves everyone. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

Don't be afraid! When God's glorious messengers are around, what can take away all fear? The happiness of knowing that God has come to earth to end sin and Satan's curse and to save everyone! We shouldn't let fear rule our hearts when we know that God's grace has broken through every barrier to reach us.

Prayer

I praise you, All-Powerful God, for giving me joy, which makes all fear go away. Fill my heart with joy and my mind with awe as I try to understand how much you love me. Make me care more about the people who haven't heard or accepted your offer of grace through your Son, Jesus. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Holy and All-Powerful God, I have to tell you that sometimes how I treat someone depends on how they look and how they are known. But today, I realize how much you want everyone to know about your grace in Jesus. Give me the desire to love everyone and the heart to share your grace with them. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
