Passage Context

26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
27But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.
30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

Devotional Reflection

This command makes no sense without Jesus as an example. But Jesus shows us how important it is to leave our lives up to God, who made us and is our Father. All of a sudden, this makes total sense. How can you defeat an enemy most effectively? It's not to hurt or kill that person, for sure. No, the only way to defeat our enemies is for Jesus' grace to win over their hearts and for them to become like our King.

Prayer

God, You are kind and loving. Please make my heart soft and my resolve strong so I can love like Jesus did. Make my life meaningful, even to those who are against me, dislike me, laugh at me, and hate me. Use me, dear Father, to lead people to Jesus' grace. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
