Malachi 2:16 Β· KJV

"For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously."

King James Version

What does Malachi 2:16 mean? β†’

Passage Context

14Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
15And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
16For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
17Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

Devotional Reflection

HopeGrief

Some people have been through so much because of an abusive spouse that just hearing this verse breaks their hearts. God hates the pain, hurt, loss, sadness, and physical damage that many people go through when they have to leave their marriage to protect themselves spiritually and physically. In a world where people just throw things away, it is important for us to know that God hates it when we throw away people unnecessarily and break lives by acting in the wrong way. Let's hold each other up to God's holy standard. Let's not let selfishness and resentment ruin our spirits. Let's not break our promise to God by being rude, ignoring, or hurting the people closest to us. And in a world where divorce and its effects hurt people, let's go find them, include them, and bring them home to God's family so they can heal.

Prayer

Almighty God, please help us keep the promises we make to You and to each other. Make our words strong, our promises last, and our lives true to what we say. Bless the people whose hearts have been broken by spouses who treated them unfairly, abused them, or were unfaithful. Thank You for setting a great example with the strong marriages of so many of Your people. Give me and my family a legacy of faithfulness that will last for many generations. Also, dear Father, please use me to comfort, bless, and welcome those who have been hurt, hurtful, and life-shatteringly broken by bad marriages. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
