Mark 8:36 Β· KJV

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

King James Version

What does Mark 8:36 mean? β†’

Passage Context

34And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
36For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Devotional Reflection

FearShame

We try to get a lot of different things. Only one thing is really important. If you go to your final address without the Lord, it doesn't matter if you have a lot of money, a big house, and a lot of prestige. Even worse is waking up in the middle of your busy life to find that you are in a barren land where Christ doesn't live and there is no life. Let's not waste our lives, souls, and meaning on things that won't last.

Prayer

Father, keep my priorities in order, my life pure, and my heart open to Your will rather than letting my own self-interest blind me. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
