Passage Context

33And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
36And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

Devotional Reflection

No one wants to be the last one. It's hard enough for us to settle for second place, let alone last. Jesus turns the order around. The person who matters most to Him is not the one who wants to be famous and have a high status. Like Jesus, the most important person is willing to give up rank, status, and importance to serve. For Jesus, being last means being first in service and in God's eyes.

Prayer

Amazing God, my Savior, thank you for creating a wonderful world for me and for giving your Son to pay for my sins. How am I ever going to be able to repay you for your kindness and grace? Help me to treat people kindly and with grace. Give me the ability to see people as you do, valuing and treating each person with the same respect that Jesus does. I offer my prayers in the name of the Lord Jesus, who washed the feet of His disciples. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

God, my great Savior, you made the world a wonderful place for me and sent your Son to save me. How can I ever thank you or repay you for all the good things you've done? Help me be gracious and kind to those I serve. Give me eyes to see people the way you do, so I don't judge them by how they look but instead value and treat them the way Jesus does. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
