"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

King James Version

What does Matthew 1:21 mean? β†’

Passage Context

19Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Devotional Reflection

LoveGratitudeHopeAwe

Jesus had to take on the people's sins before He could save them (and us) from them (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 John 4:10). His own people turned against Him before they could accept His forgiveness. The gift of salvation that Jesus gave cost Him a lot. It reminds us that God loves us very much and that salvation is a wonderful gift. We know and experience both truths because of Jesus.

Prayer

Thank you, Almighty God and Savior, for paying the price for my sin through Jesus. Thank you, dear Lord, for assuming human flesh, enduring its challenges, and facing rejection so that I might be saved. All other names pale in comparison to Jesus, to whom I give thanks and praise because of my salvation. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Jesus. Yeshua. Joshua of the world of the spirit. Jesus, the son of Mary and God, comes to help us break down the strongholds that Satan has built in our lives. He comes to bring peace to our troubled hearts and joy to our nights of despair. He comes to help us and bless us, but He also comes to do something that no one else could do: to save us from our sins, those spiritual flaws, mistakes, transgressions, and sins. Praise God! A rescuer who actually did what we couldn't do to make us what we aren't: children of God who are pure, perfect, and holy, as He is. (cf. Col. 1:21-23)

Prayer

Thank you, Father, for the way Jesus and the Holy Spirit have forgiven me, washed me clean, and changed me. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Thank you, dear Lord, for putting on human flesh, dealing with its problems, and being turned away so that I could be saved. Jesus is the only name that matters to me because He saved me. I give all my thanks and praise to Him. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
