"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid."

King James Version

What does Matthew 5:14 mean? →

Passage Context

12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Our lives won't be a waste. We will either lead people away from God or show them how important it is to stay true to Him. Let's make an effort today to show God's holiness and grace in everything we say and do.

Prayer

O God, grant that through the things I say, do, and influence, others may see Your holiness and grace and come to recognize Your majesty and power. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Christians can't play hide and seek with the rest of the world. We were saved from the dark, so now we need to let our light shine. That means that sometimes other people see God's light shining through us and learn to praise God through us. At other times, though, it means that our faith makes us stand out in a world of darkness and makes us easy targets. No matter what, we can't hide. We are light in a world full of darkness, so we have to shine!

Prayer

Holy God, please give me strength so I can show Your light to the lost world around me with the courage of Jesus and the love of God. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Our world is mostly dark. Even though it may not look like it, darkness has a lot of power over what is said and how the rest of the world sees it. People will notice someone who lives for Christ. You can't ignore their loyalty to Jesus and His righteousness. So, what will we do with that light? Will other people see our Father in Heaven, who sent His Son to save us, and be drawn to Him? Or will they turn away from the way of Christ because we don't do much but talk? Let them see God's grace in us so they will come to know the Savior.

Prayer

Thank you, Holy and Righteous Father, for your grace, which saved me. Please help me show your character and grace in everything I do, so that when people see me and know I'm a Christian, they'll praise you for the service they've seen me do. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer

God, I pray that what I say, what I do, and how I live my life will show others Your holiness and grace and lead them to recognize Your majesty and power. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
