2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Devotional Reflection

We shouldn't see this as a way to get our list of wants fulfilled. Instead, we should see it for what it really is: an invitation to seek a loving relationship with God above all else. When we find Him, our priorities will be straight, and our hearts will be able to tell what is really important and what is not. Then we'll realize that what we have in Him is what we really want most.

Prayer

Amazing and kind Father, I'll be the first to admit that I frequently have selfish thoughts in my heart. But in times like these, Father, I understand that I need You the most and that I want to do what You want. In order to see through any self-serving lies that would prevent me from putting You first in my life, kindly kindle Your Spirit within me. Please pardon me when I act petty, selfish, or shallow. May I get to know You as well as a mortal can, not so that I can be satisfied, but so that You can be honored. Owing to Your grace. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Don't think that this promise means that God will give us everything we want. Notice the first strong phrase that qualifies this promise: "Delight yourself in the LORD." As my heart enjoys the Lord and His will and goals, I see a wonderful truth at work: He gives me what I want. When I want what the LORD wants, He likes to give me what my heart wants. This prayer comes from an old hymn: "Sweet will of God, still fold me closer, until I am completely lost in You." When I lose myself in God's will and my heart is happy to honor Him, God moves quickly to give us what we want and to give me more of Himself.

Prayer

Holy LORD, God of our ancestors and great giver of all good things, I thank you that you want to bless me and give me a lot of your grace. Please move my heart so that I want to do what you want and then have the courage to ask you to do it for your glory. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Wonderful and Kind Father, I'll be honest with You: my heart is often full of selfish things. But in times like these, Father, I know that You are what I need most and that my heart wants Your will. Please kindle Your Spirit in me so I can see through any selfish lies that would keep me from putting You first in my life. Please forgive me when I'm small, rude, or shallow. May I know You as well as it is possible for a human to know You, not so I can be full, but so You can be respected. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.
