Romans 8:26 Β· KJV

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

King James Version

What does Romans 8:26 mean? β†’

Passage Context

24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Devotional Reflection

PeaceGratitudeHope

Sometimes it seems like our prayers hit the ceiling and fall to the ground. Sometimes we are so full of feelings that we can't find the words to say what's in our hearts. Thank God that we know the power of our prayers doesn't come from what we say, but from God's grace that comes to us through the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Holy God and Loving Father, thank you for giving me the Holy Spirit. Because of the Holy Spirit, I know for sure that you hear everything I say, think, and feel when I pray. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Most of us will have to deal with very hard things at some point in our lives. When we do, we will probably feel like our prayers are just going up into the air. The things we say will seem empty and pointless. We can't seem to put into words what's on our minds. We feel like our words don't work and aren't enough. So, what do we do? This promise has our trust: When we pray, we talk to God. Even when we don't know what to say, we give Him our hearts and trust that the Holy Spirit will take all of our thoughts, feelings, and frustrations that we can't put into words to God. The Spirit tells God what's in our hearts and prays for us based on what God wants. Even when we don't know what to say, the Spirit knows what we need. What a great and comforting grace!

Prayer

Abba Father, it's so comforting to know that Your Holy Spirit brings my words, thoughts, and feelings to You. Father, sometimes I don't feel good enough or worthy enough to talk to You. Thank You for letting me know that You will always listen to me, even when I can't say what I want to say. In Jesus' precious name, I pray. Amen.

Isn't it wonderful? God hears my prayers even when I can't say what I want to say and my heart is heavy. It's not because I'm smart, articulate, or religious enough to pray the way I should. No, it's because God has been kind enough to put His Spirit in our hearts to tell us what my words and mind can't say. God hears all of my groans, longings, heartaches, and heart-cries. He knows what I can't put into words but can only feel. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, He answers those unspoken prayers with His presence, grace, and power.

Prayer

Father, it makes me feel better to know that You understand what I can't express, even when I don't know what to say. I trust You to answer my prayers as You see fit, because I know You understand my needs much better than I do. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.
