"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

God gives us two gifts that meet the righteous requirements of the Law but that the Law could never give us on its own. First, He gives us His Son Jesus, who is the perfect sacrifice for sin, to forgive, cleanse, and redeem us from our sin. Second, He gives us His Spirit to help us become what He wants us to be. God gives us what the Law and the Prophets said would happen in the New Covenant. God's plan, promises, and gifts are all wonderful.

We don't need a law to tell us what to do when the Spirit lives in us. The Spirit gives people the kind of character that God wants, which is much more than what the law requires (cf. Gal. 5:22-23). The law can teach us what God wants and show us what is wrong, but it can't make us less sinful or give us the power to live in God's will. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit can cleanse, change, empower, and inspire us in ways that the law can't (Romans 8:1-4; 2 Corinthians 3:17-18). Let's thank God for giving us His Spirit, who is a loving and powerful part of Him.

Jesus did what we couldn't do: He lived a perfect life before God. He showed that sin isn't something we have to do and that it doesn't have to keep us in chains. He gave us His Spirit so that we could not only share in His forgiveness and cleansing grace, but also have the power to live in a way that pleases God. Jesus is the one who pays for our sins and saves us.
