The Ugly Tree

Published: January 14, 2024 · Reviewed: April 2, 2024

ISAIAH 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Jesus was sent to provide us beauty rather than ashes. For His glory, to change the ashes of our lives into something glorious.

One day as I was walking, I came across a tree. It had an awkward shape and was short and twisted.

It was clear that it had endured numerous storms and significant damage. Sincere to say, the tree itself was unsightly.

But on that particular day, something changed that unsightly tree into something stunningly lovely and aesthetically pleasing. There were tiny pink flowers all over it. In actuality, the tree's gnarled branches were teeming with life.

I was admiring the tree when it made me think of how, although we believers may not be particularly attractive on our own, when Jesus' life and love flow through us, we are transformed into magnificent beings.

Therefore, regardless of how deformed and ugly you may have become as a result of life's storms, if you allow Jesus to live and manifest through you, everyone will perceive beauty rather than ashes and ugliness.

JEREMIAH 17:7-8 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

SAY THIS: Believe in Jesus and make my life better

Prayer

Heavenly Father, We thank You for the promise of beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and praise for heaviness. We acknowledge our need for Your transformative power in our lives. Like the gnarled tree, we may be marred by life's storms, yet in Your hands, we become vessels of Your glory. Help us to trust in You, to spread our roots by Your river of life, and to bear fruit in every season. May we reflect Your beauty and love to the world, that You may be glorified. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
