Respect Your Parents

Children are taught to respect, honor, and obey their parents in God's Word, the Bible.

COLOSSIANS 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

EPHESIANS 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Children should respect and submit to their parents.

You must respect and obey your parents even if they do not practice the Christian faith. However, when they instruct you to commit sin by acting improperly, God does not expect you to obey them. (Refer to Acts 5:29)

We may learn how serious it is for kids to disobey their parents from the Old Testament. The penalty was really harsh. Children who defied their parents back then were put to death!

The Old Testament law was written to instruct us even if we do not now live under it. It demonstrates to us what God thinks of disobedient kids.

DEUTERONOMY 21:18-21 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

SAY THIS: Children should obey their parents since it is God's will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for the grace to honor and obey our parents as Your Word instructs. Guide us to respect them, even when they falter in faith. Give us wisdom to discern right from wrong, and strength to stand firm in righteousness, even when it contradicts their instructions. Remind us of the seriousness of disobedience, as shown in the Old Testament. May we always strive to fulfill Your will, respecting and obeying our parents, for it is pleasing to You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
