Should Christians Imagine?

Published: May 15, 2024 · Reviewed: July 7, 2024

2 CORINTHIANS 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Many Catholics avoid using their imagination because they associate it with evil. But there's no doubt that God had a purpose for giving humans imagination.

The thought once crossed my mind as I was contemplating this: "Why did God make mankind with an imagination?"

Do you share my belief that He is the Creator? Additionally, God endowed man with creativity.

I prayed to God whether there was anything in the Bible that supported using our imaginations, and He suggested I check in Hebrews 11. Even though I had read the chapter many times before, I was still surprised by what I discovered.

Faith is described as "...evidence of things not seen" in verse 1. I reasoned that if it involves something that you cannot see, it must involve the world of the imagination.

If it couldn't be seen, people would claim that we were simply believing the impossible.

In reality, according to the dictionary, imagine refers to developing a mental picture of (something not present). What could more accurately summarize meaning of faith in Hebrews 11:1?

Even though the chapter had just started, I was already anticipating it. I frequently observed that the characters in this chapter had used their imaginations to "see" things that others had not been able to see.

I started to understand how closely connected faith and creativity are, much like how wet is with water. They cannot be separated.

So, without dread, live a Biblical life. Think about what God has told in His Bible and apply it to your life!

2 CORINTHIANS 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

We must give up imaginations that are not in line with God's Word, and preserve and nourish the ones that do.

SAY THIS: Imagination belongs to faith, so I will use imagination in line with God's Word.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of imagination, a reflection of Your divine creativity. We pray that our imaginations align with Your Word, fostering faith in the unseen. May we cast down any thoughts that exalt themselves against Your knowledge, and bring every thought into obedience to Christ. Help us to use our imaginations to envision Your promises, to strengthen our faith, and to glorify You. We believe that imagination belongs to faith, and we commit to using it in line with Your Word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
