JOHN 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
GENESIS 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Since God is spirit and we were made in his likeness, it stands to reason that since He is spirit, so are we.
To put it crystally, you are a spirit-being, you have a soul (mind and feelings), and you inhabit a body,
1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
According to the Bible, people are made up of three parts: body, spirit and soul. (Note that spirit and soul are different.)
ROMANS 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Keep in mind that you must move your body in some way. Therefore, your body is something that you hold rather than the true you. You must also refresh your mind. (verse 2). In this chapter, you are not instructed to take any action regarding your spirit because, when you accept Jesus, your spirit is the portion that receives a new birth from God.
JOHN 3:6-7 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
According to this verse of Scripture, it is your spirit, not your mind or your body, that is reborn when you are reborn.
Your spirit, which is reborn, in good standing with God, and filled with His life, is therefore the true you. You must exercise self-control over your body and the food you consume so that your mind can be refreshed by the truth of God's Word. Your way of life will then change and become more in line with God's will.
SAY THIS: I am a spirit-being, according to the Bible. I inhabit a body and have a soul.
