Should Poor People Be Givers?

Published: May 25, 2024 Β· Reviewed: August 7, 2024

ACTS 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Giving makes the donor feel better. You have a greater need to contribute when you are poorer.

Most individuals who are unaware that giving is like planting seeds believe it's improper for a poor person to give to God. Giving, however, is like sowing a crop.

2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-8 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

LUKE 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Giving plants the seed for a greater crop of blessings. Nobody is more in need of that than someone in poverty.

Jesus praised a weary widow for sacrificing everything she had.

LUKE 21:1-4 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. 3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: 4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

SAY THIS: An approach to receive blessings is to give.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for teaching us the joy of giving. Help us to remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. May we sow bountifully, not grudgingly, but cheerfully, knowing that You love a cheerful giver. Grant us the grace to give, even in our poverty, like the widow who gave all she had. May we understand that giving is like planting seeds, and as we give, may we reap a greater crop of blessings. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
