Jeremiah's Warnings

Published: September 12, 2024 · Reviewed: October 5, 2024

Jeremiah's warnings made the leaders in Judea very uncomfortable because of the fear he was trying to instill in the people so that they would turn back to God and abandon worshiping the false gods of Baal.

They plotted against him but failed to stop him.

The leaders of Jesus' time plotted against him and hoped that the name of Jesus would be remembered no more. They continued even after Jesus' death to stop the disciples from preaching in the name of Jesus. Their efforts there failed as well.

Today, we know the names of Jeremiah and Jesus, but we don't know the names of the plotters of Jeremiah's death and we don't know the names of the Pharisees.

It seems that the more people try to silence those who are working to do the right thing the more their names are known and their truths spread. Seldom do we know the names of those who oppose them.

Gandhi worked for justice for the people of India.

Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in America.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Worked to end segregation and other acts of injustice in the United States.

Nelson Mandela was a prisoner for many years in South Africa and helped to end apartheid.

Lech Walesa was a key figure of the Solidarity movement in Poland which helped to lessen the hold of the government on business.

These names will remain known because of their historical significance. I don't know the names of those who opposed them, do you?

In order for all of the above to have succeeded there were the unknown and unsung that supported them.

Jesus' name will be remembered because of us and those with whom we share the Good News.

Prayer

Almighty and eternal God, you supported Jeremiah during his ministry even though the rulers tried to silence him. We know you will support us as we work to spread the Good News and work to establish a climate of love and justice in our world today. Amen.
