What do you value? What are the things you treasure?
We have considered these questions in another context, but it's worth considering again as we read these words from Matthew's Gospel.
I have noticed that the highest fences are those of people with something they fear might be stolen. The wealthy often live in gated communities with guards to insure that no one has access unless invited.
I'm not trying to say that they are not storing up treasures in heaven as well, but we know that it can be harder, as Jesus told us, for the wealthy to appreciate heavenly treasure.
When I think about what I treasure most, I think of my family – children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, sisters, etc.; then I think of my friends who often keep me sane in an insane world!
My faith and my faith community help me keep my eye on what is important, and give me confidence in the promises of Christ.
Yes, I enjoy my new car which I treated myself with when I sold my house; but I refused to spend more than was necessary to provide me with a safe mode of transportation for as long as I am able to drive. (I don't kid myself that I will still be driving more than ten years.)
I have insurance because it is sensible, but if I lost everything tomorrow, I would only regret losing the pictures of those I love.
I don't think that I am very different from most of you who are reading this. My faith, my family and friends are my treasures, and most likely yours.
Let's take some time today to see the ways in which we can continue to store up treasures in heaven and not worry about the treasures we might have on earth.
