Although King David was warning the rulers of his time, the warning might be appropriate for the leaders of today. We know that God hears the cries of the poor and history bears witness to this.
From the beginning of time, there has been a desire for power and there have been men and women who don't care what they do in order to achieve it. It doesn't matter is the power was person to person or village to village, or country over country.
However, when people are persecuted and enslaved, they eventually cry out for help, God gives them the courage they need to rebel and the fight for freedom is on.
Whether it was Israel, America, Germany, the Soviet Union, or any other place where freedoms were suppressed, people rise up and God helps them. America broke with England, Germany was reunited, the Soviet Union was dissolved and there are still battles for freedom happening in all corners of the world.
No one should be comfortable thinking that they will be able to sustain injustice forever. There will always be people who will work just as hard to protect the rights of the poor and the vulnerable.
I think of the migrant workers in the Southern United States, the coal miners in mountains of Appalachia, child workers all over the world, and other injustices that were addressed so that people would be able to live in safety and with dignity.
There are still issues that need to be addressed in the world and God is watching and listening. Unjust leaders should read this psalm and take notice. The people will only take so much before they rise up and raise their prayers to a God who loves them.
