When our hearts are loaded down with carousing, drunkenness and cares of this life, our hearts are not on God. If we become overwhelmed by the cares of life, we can turn to ways of easing the pain that actually increase the problems.
Some people will turn to gambling thinking that a solid win will solve all their problems. Another might turn to drugs or alcohol to ease the pain, not realizing the trap that they are.
One of the problems with trying to use pleasures such as carousing and drunkenness for the emptiness we can sometimes feel, or to escape the cares of this life, is that we can be led to other forms of sin. We can fall into traps that can damage us or others.
Many people have used the money they that they should be using for the family for such pleasures. This taking money away from the family and the ability to adequately provide food or shelter just adds to the problems they were trying to fix.
We have seen that too much drink or drugs can lead to taking a person's life with a car or forms of violence. It has led to domestic abuse of a spouse or a child because a person's ability to control one's behavior is diminished.
When we turn to God to fill the void, and trust that he will provide for us and protect us, our cares seem a little less burdensome. It isn't always easy, but Jesus told us that he would help carry our burdens.
In the end, life's difficulties are easier to carry when we allow Jesus to help, and don't look to the temptations of the world to save us.
