The Innocents

Published: June 1, 2025 · Reviewed: June 11, 2025

It's ironic that Herod, the Jewish king, orders the massacre of male children when it was the massacre of male Hebrew children that was the last straw in Egypt and led, finally, to the Exodus.

Moses escaped the massacre in Egypt and established the Jews as a people and gave them the laws of the first covenant.

Jesus escapes the massacre ordered by Herod and establishes God's kingdom on earth and gives us a new law of love for the new covenant.

We still have innocent children abused and killed today.

Human trafficking is only one of the problems that affect children.

In some countries, children, especially young girls are kidnapped from their villages.

In some areas of our world, education for girls is the threat and schools for girls have been attacked and students and teachers killed.

We certainly know of other ways in which the innocent have been misused.

In the state where I live, there are thousands of "unaccompanied minors" which is a term for homeless children.

Little is done to ensure their safety or their ability to receive an education, or even a place to live.

Child abuse is not a crime in many areas.

Mentally challenged people have been refused education, housing or job opportunities.

People with physical disabilities in many places have limited access to sidewalks and businesses and often to neighborhood schools.

Who is watching over the innocents?

Yes, God is always watching, and needs saviors to step in and help to change the situations that they can.

He needs all of us to work for equal access, to shut down opportunities for human trafficking and internet sites that lead to child abuse.

He needs our eyes and ears to be aware of the needs of the innocents and our mouths and hands to work for change.

Prayer

Lord, may we recognize the innocent among us an work to illuminate the opportunities for abuse, neglect and discrimination. Amen.
