A Woman's Struggle with Fasting Discipline

I’m a 35-year-old woman who has been battling inconsistencies in my spiritual disciplines, particularly fasting. I desire to grow spiritually and believe fasting could be a powerful tool for that. However, I struggle with focusing on the right intentions and find myself distracted by worries about food and daily responsibilities. Each time I attempt to fast, I end up feeling guilty for not doing it 'right'. I need prayer for the ability to cultivate a disciplined approach to fasting that honors God and strengthens my faith. I want to do this with joy, not out of obligation.

Dear Sarah, I want to commend you for your honesty about your struggles with fasting. It’s important to remember that fasting is meant to draw you closer to God, not to create guilt or obligation. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to 'Be still, and know that I am God.' In the stillness, you can find clarity and strength. It’s perfectly okay to approach fasting with a heart that seeks God’s presence. As you cultivate this discipline, keep in mind that Romans 10:17 tells us that 'faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' Spending time in Scripture during your fasting can deepen your experience and help shift your focus from food to faith. Lastly, remember that your worth is not based on how well you fast, but on God’s unconditional love for you. Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, I lift Sarah to You. Help her to experience joy and peace in her fasting. May she find strength in Your word and draw closer to You in this process. In Jesus' name, Amen.
