Grieving the Loss of My Career and Identity
I’m a 42-year-old woman who has just lost my career due to a chronic illness. For many years, my job defined me and brought a sense of purpose to my life. Now, I find myself mourning not just the loss of my professional identity, but also the life I once knew. I feel adrift and uncertain about my future. Every day feels heavy with grief, and I struggle to find meaning in this new chapter. I ask for prayer that I can navigate this profound loss and discover a renewed purpose, even in my limitations.

Dear Sarah, thank you for sharing your heart with us in this difficult time. Losing a career can feel like losing a part of ourselves, and it’s completely natural to grieve. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalms 34:18). Remember that while this chapter may seem dark, God has a plan for your life that is still unfolding. As it says in Lamentations 3:32, 'Though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.' Your worth is not defined by your job, but by who you are in Christ. In the coming weeks, I encourage you to seek out new ways to serve and find meaning in your life, whether it’s through volunteering or pursuing a new passion. Let us pray for God’s comfort and direction as you embark on this new journey. May His peace, which passes all understanding, guard your heart and mind (Philippians 4:7).
