Seeking to Strengthen My Fasting Discipline
Hi Pastor Grace, I’ve been feeling a strong pull towards deepening my spiritual life, particularly through fasting. I’ve read about its importance and how it can bring me closer to God, but I find it incredibly challenging. There are days when I start with good intentions, but then the temptations of daily life and the comfort of food pull me away. I want to cultivate a more disciplined approach to fasting, not just as a routine but as a meaningful way to connect with God. I’m also struggling with feelings of guilt when I give in. Please pray for clarity and strength as I embark on this journey of fasting and spiritual growth. I want to learn how to rely on God more during these times of sacrifice. Thank you.

Dear Sam, thank you for your heartfelt request. It’s wonderful to hear that you are seeking to deepen your relationship with God through fasting. Remember that fasting is not merely about abstaining from food; it is about devoting that time to prayer and intimacy with the Lord. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus teaches us that when we fast, we should do so in a way that brings glory to God, not out of obligation but from a heart desiring to grow closer to Him. As it says in James 1:5, if anyone lacks wisdom, let them ask of God, who gives generously to all. This includes guidance on your fasting practice. I encourage you to start small; perhaps designate one day a week to fast, gradually building up as you feel more comfortable. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, as Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, and lean not on your own understanding. He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:6). Keep your focus on Him during your fast, and you will experience His presence in powerful ways. Let’s pray: Lord, I ask for Your guidance and strength for Sam as he embarks on this journey of fasting. Amen.
