Struggling to Stay Committed to My Fasting Journey

I’m a 28-year-old woman named Sarah, and I’ve recently felt a strong call to develop a discipline of fasting in my life. However, I find myself struggling to stay committed. Each time I plan a fast, I quickly get distracted by the busyness of life or I succumb to cravings that pull me away from my goal. I know fasting can bring me closer to God, yet I often feel ashamed when I fail. I desire to have focus and perseverance during these times of fasting. I want to grow spiritually and deepen my connection with God, but my willpower feels so weak. I ask for prayer to help me remain steadfast and to build a lasting fasting discipline in my life.

Senior Pastor, Bethel Church

Dear Sarah, it is commendable that you recognize the call to develop a fasting discipline! Fasting is indeed a powerful means of drawing near to God. Remember, as it says in Matthew 6:16-18, fasting should be done with a focus on the Lord's glory and not for our own recognition. It's a journey, and as you struggle, be reminded of 2 Corinthians 5:7, which encourages us to walk by faith, not by sight. Each time you sense your resolve weakening, take a moment to pause and place your trust in the Lord. He promises in James 1:5 that if you ask for wisdom, He will give it to you generously. This isn’t a test of willpower but an opportunity to deepen your reliance on God. As you embark on this journey, let go of shame and lean into His grace. Let us pray together: Heavenly Father, guide Sarah in her pursuit of fasting, strengthen her spirit, and help her feel Your presence in every moment of weakness. Amen.
