The Long Goodbye: Coping with My Father's Loss of Self

My dad was once my hero, a towering figure full of wisdom and laughter. Now, the Alzheimer's disease has taken so much from him and from me. I find myself grieving not just for who he was, but for who he is becoming—someone who often forgets my name, confuses me with family members, and sometimes doesn't recognize the life he built around him. The good days are fewer, and I feel the weight of this long goodbye. I want to be the supportive child he needs, but I often feel lost and hopeless. I’m asking for prayers for strength to face this heartbreak and to find ways to connect with him, even in his unrecognizable state. Please pray that I can hold onto the beautiful memories we shared.

Dear Carlos, my heart aches for you as you navigate this painful journey with your father. It is indeed a long goodbye, and it’s perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed as you witness the man you admire fade away. Remember, there’s a depth of love that transcends even the barriers of memory. In Psalms 30:5, we are reminded, "For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Although the nights may feel long and heavy, trust that joy will come even in small moments. As you continue to support your dad, find comfort in knowing that Jesus understands your grief, as He wept for Lazarus (John 11:35). Let every moment spent with him be a testament of love, and hold on to the memories that still shine brightly. I pray that the Holy Spirit brings peace to your heart and wisdom to your interactions. May you find God’s grace in the midst of your sorrow. Amen.
