Wrestling with My Parent's Diminishing Memories
As I sit by my mother's side, I can see the light in her eyes flicker and fade as Alzheimer's grips her mind. Some days she remembers me, and others, she calls me by the names of friends long gone. Each time I see her struggle, a new wave of grief swells within me, as if I am losing her all over again. It feels like I’m mourning her while she’s still alive, and I often wonder how to navigate this painful journey. I desperately seek strength and comfort as I watch someone I love fade away, even as she is still here. Please pray for me as I try to find peace in this complicated grief and the ability to cherish the moments we still have together.

Dear Emily, I want you to know that your feelings of grief and loss are valid and deeply understood by our Lord. The journey you are on is filled with heartache, and it’s important to lean into God's presence during this difficult time. Remember, "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit" (Psalms 34:18). Your mother may be slipping away, but the love you share remains eternal. Matthew 5:4 reminds us, "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." In this season, allow God’s comforting arms to surround you and remind you that He is with you through the sorrow. In John 11:25, Jesus assures us, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." Cling to that promise for your mother’s spirit and your own heart. May you find moments of joy amidst the pain, and may God grant you strength. I will be praying for you, that you feel His peace as you walk this tender path. Amen.
